LOS ANGELES (KNX) – In case you missed it, Tuesday was truly a twos-day.
The date, 02/22/22, has caused excitement on social media. From memes to fun facts, the palindrome day seems to be celebrated by many.
But why are we so excited by palindrome day?
Barry Markovsky, a sociology professor at the University of South Carolina, told KNX In Depth it just comes down to how our brains operate.
“It’s kind of a trivial thing, but it also kind of speaks to how our brains work, how our culture works, and a lot of other important things,” he said.
Markovsky added that when it comes to the neurological aspect of 2/22/22, our brains find pleasure in such patterns.
“What’s going on neurologically is that because we’re wired to look for patterns, when we find them our brains give our synapses a little dopamine and it feels good,” he explained. “So we are kind of internally rewarded for finding patterns…”
He noted that sometimes humans take those tiny pleasures, like date patterns, and use it to create something bigger.
“It is kind of interesting when these pattern recognition mechanisms in us makes something pleasurable, we don’t just leave it at that,” he said. “We sometimes kind of organize ourselves and we start to develop a little cultural traditions. When we start to act on this, when we start to collectively act on this, it become real even though it might just be a silly pattern.”
