A Quebec woman received a 22-year prison sentence on Thursday after sending letters containing ricin to former President Donald Trump in 2020, according to federal authorities.

In January, Pascale Ferrier, 55, pleaded guilty to making ricin in her home and mailing it to Trump and eight Texas law enforcement officials in threatening letters.

Ricin, an extremely toxic poison, is found in the waste material left over from processing castor beans.

In the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Texas, Ferrier faced eight charges of prohibitions concerning biological weapons and an additional count of the same charge in Washington, D.C.

Ferrier agreed to have the Texas case transferred to Washington for a plea and sentencing, the release for the Justice Department shared.

In her letter to Trump, Ferrier was urging the then-president to “[g]ive up and remove [his] application for this election.”

The dual citizen of Canada and France drove from Canada to a border crossing bridge in Buffalo, New York, where border patrol agents arrested her when they found that she was carrying a loaded firearm, other weapons, and hundreds of rounds of ammunition.

After she pled guilty in January, U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Matthew Graves said, “there is no place for political violence in our country, and no excuse for threatening public officials or endangering our public servants.”

Ferrier’s attorneys worked out a plea with the Justice Department of 262 months in prison in January, but it was formalized by a judge on Thursday.
