The outdoor gear company Yeti announced that it was recalling nearly two million of its soft coolers and gear cases because the magnets in them could be ingested.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced the recall with the company on Thursday, noting that no injuries or batteries being ingested have been reported at this time.

Still, the coolers and gear cases carry the possibility of the magnets being ingested because the main pockets “can fail and release the magnets,” Yeti said in a statement.

If swallowed, the magnets, which are described as high-powered, could cause serious injury or even death, the recall shared.

“When two or more high-powered magnets are swallowed, the ingested magnets can attract to each other, or to another metal object, and become lodged in the digestive system,” CPSC said in its notice. “This can result in perforations, twisting and/or blockage of the intestines, infection, blood poisoning and death.”

The items affected by the recall include the Hopper M30 Soft Cooler 1.0 and 2.0, Hopper M20 Soft Backpack Cooler, and SideKick Dry Gear Case.

Recalled items were sold nationally from March 2018 to January 2023 at Dick’s Sporting Goods, ACE Hardware, Amazon, the company’s website, and various other stores.

There have been 1,399 reports of the magnet-lined closures having issues, the CPSC shared.

Anyone who has purchased one of the 1.9 million affected items is encouraged to stop using them immediately and contact Yeti by visiting its recall website for a refund or replacement.
