LOS ANGELES (KNX) — Last year, straws were on the chopping block in California. This year, plastic utensils and ketchup packets.

The state has issued a new law on top of existing regulations permitting restaurants to distribute single-use straws only upon customer request. Now, take-out establishments may only provide diners with single-use condiment packages, for garnishes like ketchup or soy sauce, as well as disposable utensils, only when asked.

The law, A.B. 1276, authored by Assemblymember Wendy Carrillo (D.-Boyle Heights), was designed to cut down on use of single-use plastics and resulting waste.

Businesses will have until June of next year to comply.
