LOS ANGELES (KNX) — Administrators at four University of California campuses announced Thursday they would be extending remote, online instruction through the end of January amid a worsening, nationwide surge of the Omicron variant COVID-19 cases.

UC Irvine, UC Davis, UC Santa Cruz, and UCSD cited spiking infection rates in pushing back in-person learning for students.

“It’s going to be bumpy for a bit longer as Omicron impacts our community," said UC Davis Chancellor Gary May in a video message. “Again, please be patient as we determine how best to offer the education that you are here for.”

The decision followed an announcement Thursday that CSU Los Angeles would go remote for the first three weeks of the spring 2022 semester, joining CSU campuses in San Diego, Sacramento, the Channel Islands, Fresno, the East Bay, San Marcos, and San Francisco.

Plans for students at UCLA to return to in-person instruction remained in place as of Friday.
