Researchers at Facebook's parent company, Meta, are working with first responders in Southern California to develop new AI that can help them make decisions in an emergency.

During a workshop at the company's L.A. campus, the group discussed how new technology could help first responders figure out where people are going amid a humanitarian crisis so they can pinpoint where to deploy resources.
Alex Pompe, a research manager for Meta's Data for Good initiative, said Meta's goal is "to build different data sets that can be shared externally for social impact."
He told KNX News reporter Nataly Tavidian, "Conversation has been around how we can identify changes in forests or buildings and structures when we look at satellite imagery."
Abby Browning with Cal OES said, "In emergency management situations, awareness is everything. If you know what's going on, you can make a better decision."
Browning said one issue they are looking into involves tourist data - "is there a way to look at tourist movement versus regular commuters or regular folks that live here?"
With information like this, Browning believes first responders will be better prepared and able to get more resources to specific locations.
