WAIKOLOA BEACH, Hawaii. (KNX) – A San Pedro man was arrested in Hawaii in early September after police say he stabbed his girlfriend multiple times in their hotel room.
Richard Lopez, 65, was arrested on Sept. 1 at the Waikoloa Beach Marriott Resort. South Kohala Patrol officers responded to the room Lopez shared with his 64-year-old girlfriend after reporting a stabbing.
Both Lopez and his girlfriend were taken to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.
“During the course of this investigation, police determined that Lopez had stabbed the victim multiple times causing her to sustain life-threatening injuries,” the Hawaii Police Department said.
The woman remains hospitalized, police said.
Court documents obtained by Hawaii News Now alleged Lopez slashed his girlfriend in the face and neck numerous times.
Following his hospitalization, Lopez was taken to the Kealakehe Police Station. On Sept. 3, police charged him with second-degree attempted murder, first and second-degree assault, and misdemeanor abuse of a family member.
Authorities set bail at $300,000, but Hawaii News Now reports it's since increased to $500,000 following a recent court appearance. He remains in custody.
He could face life in prison with the possibility of parole.
