ANAHEIM, Calif. (KNX) – Anaheim Mayor Ashleigh Aitken invited the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence to Angels Pride Night after the group was disinvited by the Los Angeles Dodgers to its pride event.

“I’m inviting the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence to join me for @Angels Pride Night at Anaheim Stadium on June 7,” she tweeted. “Pride should be inclusive and like many, I was disappointed in the Dodgers decision.”

The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, described on its website as “a leading-edge order of queer and trans nun”, were initially going to be honored by the Dodgers during the team’s annual Pride Night on June 16.

The Dodgers’ invitation was criticized by many Catholic organizations and by Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Florida, who said in a complaint that the group "mocks Christians through diabolical parodies of our faith."

The team then announced Wednesday that it was withdrawing the invitation.

“Given the strong feelings of people who have been offended by the sisters' inclusion in our evening, and in an effort not to distract from the great benefits that we have seen over the years of Pride Night, we are deciding to remove them from this year's group of honorees,” the team said in a statement.

Following the announcement, the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence issued a statement, writing, “The Dodgers capitulated in response to hateful and misleading information from people outside their community, who target not only the LGBTQ++ community but also women’s autonomy over their bodies, people and communities of color, and other faiths and nationalities.”

LA Pride announced shortly after that it would not be participating in Dodgers Pride Night this year.
