SACRAMENTO (KNX) — Three children died Monday, after their father took their lives in a Sacramento church, according to the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office, adding that a fifth person also died in the shooting, but at this point, it is unclear if that person was also family.

All three children were under the age of 15, Sgt. Rod Grassman confirmed to CBS Sacramento. He added that the father took his own life.

The shooting happened just after 5 p.m. at a church in the Arden-Arcade area of the city and was reported by a worker who heard the shot, according to ABC10 News.

"There was apparently a worker upstairs in this building, they heard a shot, and then more shots...they left that building, called us," Grassman said during a press briefing on the shooting Monday night.

Grassman added that, at this time, there is no known motive for the shootings and names of the dead have not been released.

Investigators are expected to work late into the night uncovering evidence and studying forensics, Grassman said, which may impact traffic in the area around Wyda Way, not far from Arden Way, and areas along Ethan Way and Howe Avenue, according to ABC10.

In a statement shared on Twitter, Gov. Gavin Newsom called the shooting a "another senseless act of gun violence in America."

"Our hearts go out to the victims, their families and their communities," Newsom said.

"We are working closely with local law enforcement."
