In partnership with the SPCA of Texas, Newsradio 1080 KRLD brings you 'Adoptable Pet Pals,' a weekly feature to introduce you to animals that are ready for adoption.

KRLD's Kristin Diaz along with Maura Davies from the SPCA highlight the critical need for adopting families at local animal shelters by showcasing an "Adoptable Pet Pal" that has stayed at the shelter too long.

Meet Draven, our featured Pet Pal!

He is a jolly fellow and a big one at 58 pounds. Draven is a mixed breed pup who is just over three years of age. He has a gray coat with white up front and on his head and paws. Draven is quite happy to be at the SPCA of Texas after having been abandoned in an apartment when his former owner moved out. Since being at the Russell E. Dealey Animal Rescue Center Draven has been able to warm up to people again and let go of his prior disappointment. He’s a pretty smart guy too and seems to be very trainable. He will already sit, especially if there are tasty treats involved. Draven seems to have done well around other dogs in the shelter, so being a second pooch is a possibility. Just bring any furry siblings to meet him prior to adoption. Draven requires an advanced appointment for an in-person meeting.

Meet Athena
UPDATE: Athena has been adopted!

She a very fit Shepherd mix available for adoption from the SPCA of Texas. She has a dark coat with white and tan highlights, and she weighs 30 pounds. Athena is only 4 months old, so she still has a good bit of growing to do. Like all pups of this age, Athena is full of energy and enthusiasm. Shyness is not a problem for this little girl, and she is just about as friendly as she can be. She loves to get pets and treats and can get downright silly for both. Athena is one of those dogs who seems like she would be a good fit for just about any family. If there are any other dogs already in the home, be sure to bring them by to meet her before the adoption. Athena is housed at the Jan Rees-Jones Animal Care Center, so there is no prior appointment necessary to meet her.

Meet Cocoa

As the name implies, this is a chocolate-colored dog who is about as sweet as she can be. Cocoa is a year-and-a-half old and weighs 42 pounds. She is a mixed-breed dog who may grow a bit more before she is through. Cocoa is a bit shy when first meeting new people, but she can warm up quite nicely. Cocoa is looking for a calm, quiet home and a reliable and caring family. Cocoa will probably require a little bit of adjusting time when moving into a new and unfamiliar environment. She would prefer if any children in the home were at least 10 years of age. She is housed at the Jan Rees-Jones Animal Care Center in Dallas, and there is no appointment necessary to come and meet her in person. Bring all members of the family for a proper introduction before the adoption takes place.

Meet Ken

Ken is a good guy and is patiently waiting for a forever home with the SPCA of Texas. He is a Domestic Shorthair mix who weighs 9 pounds and is covered with striped gray fur. Ken is a chill dude. He is friendly enough, but he is not a silly, hyperactive kitten. He is a pretty careful guy and it may take a bit for him to warm up to new folks. He enjoys a calm and serene environment. He is open to sharing a home with children but would prefer to meet any under the age of 12 before an adoption took place. He also wants potential adopters to know he wants to have another friendly cat waiting for him to help him adjust to the new digs. Ken is housed at the Jan Rees-Jones Animal Care Center, so no appointment is necessary to come and introduce yourself to him.

Regular adoption fees are $150 for puppies and kittens aged 0-6 months and $75 for adult dogs and cats aged 6 months or older. Fee includes spay/neuter surgery, age-appropriate vaccinations, a heartworm test for dogs six months and older and a FIV/FeLV test for cats 4 months and older, initial flea/tick preventative and heartworm preventative, a microchip, 30 days of PetHealth Insurance provided by PetHealth, a free 14-day wellness exam with VCA Animal Hospitals, a rabies tag and a free leash.

KRLD values the connection between animals and people. Through the incredible selflessness of animal advocates who rescue, rehabilitate, foster and adopt animals, we hope to be partners in finding safe and forever homes for these animals in need.
