In partnership with the SPCA of Texas, NewsRadio 1080 KRLD brings you 'Adoptable Pet Pals,' a weekly feature to introduce you to animals that are ready for adoption.

KRLD's Kristin Diaz along with Maura Davies from the SPCA highlights the critical need for adopting families at local animal shelters by showcasing an "Adoptable Pet Pal" that has stayed at the shelter too long.

Meet this week's featured Pet Pal, Zeke! UPDATE: Zeke has been adopted!

He is a friendly guy looking for a new home. He is a big ole’ Labrador Retriever mix who weighs 70 pounds. He is covered with white and light tan fur and has some huge puppy dog eyes. Zeke came to the SPCA of Texas as an owner surrender, and whoever adopts him will benefit from his prior training. He is house-trained and knows several commands like sit, stay, come, down, and shake. He walks on a leash very well, though sometimes he does get infatuated with a smell he just has to check out thoroughly. He’s good for a walk in the park because he just loves to get attention from people. He has had mixed reactions to other dogs, so bring any current pets to meet him and see if they seem to hit it off well. Visit any time and he’ll be happy to see you.

Meet Sukie!

Meet Sukie! She is a big mixed breed dog who weighs 50 pounds. She has a very attractive brindle pattern coat, and a big smile to make it even prettier. She is estimated to be at just over 5 years of age, so she’s still got some pep in her step. Sukie came to the SPCA of Texas as a stray, wandering the streets of Ennis alone. She’s had quite enough of the homeless life and wants very much to be a part of a forever family. She is quite the agreeable little lady and seems to do well with other dogs and children as well. Anyone with a big securely fenced backyard could have endless hours of fun playing with this happy girl. Sukie is currently housed at the Ellis County Animal Care Center in Waxahachie, which is open Tuesdays through Saturdays from noon to 6 p.m.

Meet Mad Eye Moody!

He’s a German Shepherd mix and a fun guy to hang out with. Named after a wizard in the Harry Potter series, he can cast a spell on any over of Shepherds. Unfortunately, Mad Eye had to have one of his eyes removed in emergency surgery after being taken in by the SPCA of Texas. He has since gotten past that setback and is ready to live a happy, healthy life with a loving forever family. He is just over 3 years of age and weighs in at 67 pounds. He’s got the classic black-over-tan coat of his breed. He is super energetic, but a well-behaved boy. He knows some basic commands and is eager and able to learn a lot more. Mad Eye Moody is housed at the Russell E. Dealey Animal Rescue Center, so a prior appointment is necessary to meet him.

Meet Gwen!

Meet Gwen! She is a 55-pound mixed-breed dog who is just under 5 years old now. She has a pretty coat of jet-black hair and adorable puppy dog eyes. Gwen had a rough road to travel before coming to the SPCA of Texas. She was taken in along with 50 other dogs, including her own puppies. Her youngsters are off to their own homes now, and Gwen is hoping to find a good forever home for herself. She has come a long way from the starting point of being very scared of people. She is still shy at first meetings but has come to trust more and is working on her leash walking and other social etiquette. She would really like to find a calm home with no children under the age of 10. She currently resides at the Jan Rees-Jones Animal Care Center.

Meet Bazooka! UPDATE: Bazooka has been adopted!

This little guy a firecracker! Bazooka is a 3-year-old Domestic Shorthair mix who weighs in at a healthy 9 pounds. He has a very classy-looking gray and white striped coat and huge yellow eyes. Like most cats, Bazooka will need to have some calm time while acclimating to a new environment. From there he should do just fine. Bazooka has shown himself to be a friendly guy, and he seems to get along well with other cats and children. He was one of a dozen cats removed from a hoarding case in Ellis County back in September, and he has responded quite well to being in his new surroundings. He’ll do even better when he lands in his forever home. Bazooka is currently housed at the Jan Rees-Jones Animal Care Center. No appointment is necessary to meet him.

KRLD values the connection between animals and people. Through the incredible selflessness of animal advocates who rescue, rehabilitate, foster and adopt animals, we hope to be partners in finding safe and forever homes for these animals in need.

Fee includes spay/neuter surgery, age-appropriate vaccinations, a heartworm test for dogs six months and older and a FIV/FeLV test for cats 4 months and older, initial flea/tick preventative and heartworm preventative, a microchip, 30 days of PetHealth Insurance provided by PetHealth, a free 14-day wellness exam with VCA Animal Hospitals, a rabies tag and a free leash.
