FORT WORTH (1080 KRLD) - A North Texas atheist group has put up a billboard in south Fort Worth.
Four years ago, the group Metroplex Atheists put up banners in downtown Fort Worth that read, "In no God we trust."
They raised some eyebrows and drew the ire of then-Mayor Betsy Price.
The group wanted to put the banners up again this year, but that request was denied.
"We were hoping to get the banners up in Fort Worth city area," says Umair Khan, Metroplex Atheists president. "We met all the policies and criterias. And those were denied based on ... reasons that had nothing to do with meeting the policy criteria."
So instead, it's put up a billboard along I-20 that reads, "Keep God out of our public schools."
It went up on July 26th and will be up for 30 days.
Group President Umair Khan says the purpose of the campaign is to highlight what he says is the danger of Christian nationalism in schools.
"Christian nationalism in our schools is a real threat to our democratic freedom," says Khan.
The billboard has garnered mixed reviews, with some expressing support and others expressing opposition.
"Some people felt like it was a negative statement," Khan says, "but this is about everyone's religious freedom."
Meanwhile, a group has filed suit against the City of Fort Worth on Metroplex Atheists' behalf for denying it the ability to put up the banners in downtown.
