The Tarrant Appraisal District could be a thing of the past, thanks to a newly-filed bill in the legislature.

Dist. 99 Rep. Charlie Geren (R) filed the bill last Friday that would abolish the Tarrant Appraisal District (TAD) and have its functions shifted to the State Comptroller.

Geren's bill does not specify Tarrant County by name, but it establishes criteria that eliminates all other counties in the state: a population of more than 2.1 million with an airport owned by the principal municipality in the county that does not offer commercial air service.

The Tarrant Appraisal District has come under fire recently for its perceived lack of transparency.

Board Director Kathryn Wilemon resigned after being recalled by the City of Keller, with the Tarrant County Commissioners Court following suit after the fact.

Last year, the TAD Board of Directors suspended Chief Appraiser Jeff Law without pay for two weeks for his handling of complaints against a real estate agent who helps people protest their property values.

KRLD News has reached out to Rep. Geren, Jeff Law and Tarrant County Judge Tim O'Hare and is waiting to hear back.
