40-year-old Joseph Butler, from Wichita Falls, had multiple outstanding warrants for his arrest including a parole violation.

On Jan. 31, a Mesquite police officer was on routine patrol, when he identified Butler's vehicle at an apartment complex in the 800 block of I-30. Butler was in the car, and the officer attempted to make contact. The suspect fled from the vehicle, and the officer pursued on foot.

Bodycam footage appears to show that while fleeing from the officer, Butler shot multiple rounds at the officer. The officer returned fire striking Butler at least twice. He was transported to a local hospital where he died.

The officer is a three-year veteran of the department. The shooting is still under investigation.
