Dallas ISD to end mask mandate

Soon, students and staffers in the Dallas ISD will no longer be required to wear masks on campus.

"Our plan is as of February 28, which is a week from Monday, we will make maths 'recommended,'" Superintendent Dr. Michael Hinojosa announced at the district's board meeting on Thursday.

Dr. Hinojosa said he made the decision based on a sharp decline in COVID-19 cases in Dallas County - in fact, he said this week, the case number in the school district was down into the single digits.

The district had actually wanted to end the mandate earlier.

"Initially, we were going to wait until Martin Luther King Day," Hinojosa said, "but we couldn't do it because the data did not allow us to do."

While the mask requirement will soon be suspended, Hinojosa said it's not a time for people to let their guards down.

"If the data turns around and tells us that we need to go back to a protocol that requires us to wear masks, we will not hesitate to do that," Hinojosa cautioned.
