Officer Reginald Jones, Reserve Officer Brad Deason, and civilian employee Sonja Davis are facing charges in connection to the alleged scheme.

According to reports, Jones is accused of receiving nearly $50,000 in the alleged scheme. The scheme had been referred to as a “gifting program" and involved nearly 160 participants, including several officers.

Chris Knox, Jones’ attorney, said in a prepared statement to a local newspaper: “this is an unfortunate case, and one where the officers charged did not do anything different than thousands of other people did during the pandemic.”

In Texas, operating a pyramid scheme and recruiting people to join it is a state jail felony. Anyone found guilty can face six months to two years of jail time and a fine up to $10,000.
