The Dallas Zoo has announced the death of a 3-month-old giraffe calf.
Saturday crews noticed Marekani walking with a limp and checked her out.
The veterinary team didn't see any severe swelling or any wounds and decided to give her pain medication and re-evaluate her the next morning. By Sunday morning her swelling and lameness had gotten worse. Vets sedated her and determined she had severe injuries including dislocating her right elbow and fracturing through her growth plate.
The vets said injuries like these are catastrophic and there was no hope for recovery, so they made the decision to euthanize her.
The zoo said it's not sure how Marekani was injured, but they're trying to figure it out to see if there's anything that they can do - to make sure something like this doesn't happen again.
The zoo said: "Although she was only with us for a short time, Marekani captured the hearts of Zoo staff, guests, and the public alike. She will be dearly missed."
