After an apparent tornado tore through Fannin County yesterday, officials in Denton County are taking action to help people prepare for severe weather.

"Planning and preparation and evacuation as designated can greatly reduce the negative outcomes of severe weather impact," County Judy Andy Eads said during today's commissioner's court meeting.

County leaders then voted unanimously to proclaim March 15-21 "Severe Weather Awareness Week." Judge Eads says when it comes to the unpredictable and ferocious Texas weather, awareness can save lives.

"We call upon all citizens to heed warnings and instructions issued by local, county and state officials and emergency management personnel.," Eads said.

In all, Eads says there have been 51 reported tornadoes in Denton County between 1955 and 2019.
