A grassroots organization down in Austin managed to get marijuana decriminalization on the ballot and now it looks like the same thing could be happening in Denton.

A Denton organization pushing to decriminalize marijuana says it has enough signatures to potentially qualify for the November election.

Nick Stevens is a member of the group Decriminalize Denton. While Denton already has a relatively relaxed marijuana policy compared to other cities, he says they want more: No citations and no arrests for misdemeanors.

"Items like the decriminalization of cannabis brings people together rather than continuing this problem of tearing people apart," Stevens said.

About 3,000 people have signed the petition, and today the group is dropping it off with the city to be verified.

Decriminalize Denton has been working with a similar organization in Austin. That group was able to gather enough signatures to get marijuana decriminalization on the ballot for the May 7th election, so voters are getting to weigh in on the issue this week.
