After a quarter century of searching, a sexual assault suspect is caught.
Investigators in Denton say Marcus Deshaun Johnson sexually assaulted a 15-year-old girl at a park on West Windsor Drive back in October of 1993.
Almost four years later, in September of 1997, police say he sexually assaulted a woman at that same park while she was on a walk.
Investigators spent the next 25 years searching for a suspect, to no avail.
"The DNA on this suspect has been repeatedly run through the system and tested," says Ofc. Allison Beckwith, Denton Police spokeswoman, "and there weren't any up until this year in 2023.
"There was a statewide DNA search," Ofc. Beckwith continued; "and based on these results, it was determined that it was possible that there was a familial match to this suspect."
That led investigators to Johnson, who is now 53 years old and living in Las Vegas.
"Our Denton PD detectives actually flew out to Las Vegas and interviewed Johnson," says Beckwith, "where he also put himself in Denton during the time of those assaults."
Johnson was extradited to Denton and indicted on two counts of aggravated sexual assault of a child in the 1993 case and three counts of sexual assault in the 1997 case.
Johnson had previously been known to Denton Police -- he was arrested on unrelated warrants there in 1993.
