Arlington (1080 KRLD) - A study of natural gas drilling sites claims more than 7,600 children in Arlington are being exposed to dangerous fumes.
An investigation into the effects of fracking looked specifically at Arlington where there are 52 drilling sites and hundreds of wellheads.
The Dallas Morning News reports that the investigation found more than half of Arlington's public schools and daycare facilities are within half a mile from the sites which are putting out fumes that can be a health risk to kids. One daycare operator told the newspaper that there is no accountability on where the drilling occurs or whether the drilling is safe.
The National Center for Investigative Reporting cited studies that show proximity to drilling sites may increase the chance of children developing asthma, leukemia and birth defects. The fumes, according to the report, can come from the drilling rigs, generators they use and trucks moving supplies into and out of drill sites.
