Texas Governor Greg Abbott is directing Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick and Texas House Speaker Phelan to convene special legislative committees to discuss ways to curb gun violence following the deadly Uvalde school shooting.
Governor Abbott says he wants the special committees to examine things like school safety, mental health, social media, police training and firearm safety.
"As Texans mourn, we must reassess the twin issues of school safety & mass violence" Governor Abbott said in a social media post.
UNT Political Science Professor Dr. Kimi King says the massacre at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde might be what gets enough people on board to support some form of gun control.
Convening the special committees is not akin to calling a special session. Dr. King says unless there are marches on the Capitol in Austin, she does not expect Governor Abbott to call a special session over this issue.
