Ask the Expert: As social media turns 25 years old, how has it impacted our lives?

Remember places like Friendster, AOL Instant Messenger or the classic MySpace?

Social media turns 25 years old this year, and it has made some of the biggest impacts on our lives, compared to anything that has appeared online.

A site called Six Degrees became the very first social media network in 1997, and the sites have grown since then into Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, TikTok, and others.

Social media has also come under fire from lawmakers and political groups because there don't seem to be any regulations on it.

Take a look at what's happening right now with Twitter.

On Thursday, Elon Musk launched a bid to buy Twitter for $43 billion in cash, in order to take it private and allow all voices to express their thoughts -- no matter how potentially dangerous they could be.
