"A staff member with North Joshua Elementary was exiting their vehicle," says DeAnna Phillips, a spokeswoman with the Burleson Police Department, "and they were approached by a suspect who then obtained their vehicle and fled the scene."

Burleson Police, along with Alvarado Police and the Johnson County Sheriff's Office, quickly found the vehicle and tried pulling the driver over, but the driver kept on going and led police on a chase.

It ended in a driveway on E. Renfro St. in Alvarado.

"The suspect then fled on foot," says Phillips. "Officers began a pursuit, and he was apprehended and arrested at 7:34 a.m. by Johnson County Sheriff's Office."

The suspect is identified as Shad Allen King, 39, of Austin; and Phillips says he had outstanding warrants and may have been desperate to obtain a vehicle and make a quick getaway.

"Burlison P.D. received a phone call at approximately 7:02 this morning in regards to an incident of a gentleman trying to confront a delivery driver, about a half a mile up the road from the elementary school, trying to obtain the delivery driver's vehicle," says Phillips.

While North Joshua Elementary School is in the Joshua ISD, it is located in the City of Burleson.

The Joshua ISD says the staffer only suffered a minor injury and was treated at the scene.

Following the carjacking, North Joshua Elementary was placed in Secure mode, meaning no visitors could enter the building.

That was lifted five minutes later when the district was notified of King's arrest.

Out of an abundance of caution, a second JISD police officer was on campus for student drop-offs.

Police say there is no ongoing threat to the public.

"We believe this is an isolated incident," says Phillips, "and there's no indication that he was specifically targeting the school or waiting for any particular member of the staff to exit their vehicle."
