With wintry weather heading to North Texas, the Texas Department of Transportation is getting a head start on treating roads.

TxDOT crews are out in force today, using a fleet of special vehicles to pretreat major highways and interstates with salt and brine.
"Pretreating is a major tool that we use to keep the roads clear," says TxDOT spokesperson Tony Hartzel. "It gives us time to treat the roads beforehand and be ready to respond when the winter precipitation starts falling."
When it comes to pretreating roads, Hartzel says timing is everything. Too early and the brine isn't as effective as it could be. It's the same problem if it's done too late. Once treatment starts, Hartzel says it usually takes about 48 hours to get the job done.
If you come across TxDOT crews while you're out and about today, Hartzel says you should try to give them some room.
"Stay out of our area so we can have enough room to work," he says. "We need everyone to stay back and give us space."
