The local chapter of Wreaths Across America is once again aiming to raise enough holiday wreaths to place on every headstone in the DFW National Cemetery.

North Texans made sure there was no wreath shortage last year, but this year the goal is bigger than ever: 51,000.

"The DFW National Cemetery is the third fastest growing cemetery in the nation," says Chris Bush, DFW National Coordinator for Wreaths Across America. "We're currently burying 25 to 30 veterans a day."

More than 16,000 wreaths have been donated so far, according to the Wreaths Across America website. Another 34,000 are needed.

To Bush and his family, this mission is personal.

"Our son was killed in Afghanistan in 2009, and we learned that there were no wreaths," Bush says. "We started that year with 250 wreaths and about 20 people. It took us 11 years before we finally reached our goal of a wreath for every veteran."

To reach the goal year after year, Bush says they rely on the generosity of the community.

The fresh wreaths are all donated and placed at the headstones by volunteers and family. This year, the Wreaths Across America ceremony is being held at the cemetery at 11 a.m. Dec. 17.

"It really brings the family together, especially during the holiday season," Bush says. "It can feel like you're still giving your loved one a present."

Wreaths are $15 each, but for every two wreaths donated a third will be added to the donation. The donation deadline is Dec. 1
