Last week, Brittany Denison made a post on Facebook pleading for her son Michael Murphey to have a good first day of school.
She wrote in her post, "Dear God, please make them be nice to him. I'm so excited yet scared for Michael... I have a huge ask of all our local parents. Let them know that if they are going to stare, it's polite to also say, 'Hi'."
Michael born with Treacher Collins syndrome, which makes the bones in his face smaller. Thankfully, Andrew Gatlin of the Midlothian Fire Department saw Denison's post on Facebook, and made sure the incoming kindergartner had an amazing first day of school.
While wearing a superhero T-shirt, with a Batman headband and Batman backpack, Michael was escorted to his first day of kindergarten by the Midlothian Fire Department, with a couple of his favorite superheroes Batman and Captain America in tow.
When the crew pulled up to Mountain Peak Elementary in Midlothian, Michael's entire kindergarten class was there curbside to greet him. Gatlin told NBC DFW, "You don't know what everyone's going through. So if you see somebody struggling, or if you see an opportunity to step in and be that hero for somebody, do it. You never know whose life you're gonna touch or change."
Principal Adam Henke added, "He's part of the family now. I think that's huge to know you are different than me, and I want to recognize and understand what that is, and I hope they get that from this experience."
Denison was thankful she didn't have to worry about Michael shedding any tears on his first day of school, but she couldn't stop her own.
Wiping tears from her cheeks, she said, "I could have never imagined. I think he's gonna have a really good first year."
