There is some controversary in Plano after the city decided to buy 50 license plate camera readers.
Plano city officials say the cameras can assist the Plano Police Department in recovering stolen vehicles and locating abducted children.
The new systems will be placed on poles adjacent to roadways and business parking lots that have been labeled hot spots for criminal activity.
For some, the new cameras have raised privacy issues with some people warning that police can essentially track all movements of anyone at any particular time.
Despite these concerns Plano law enforcement officials say they are worth the investment and prove essential for public safety.
Other Texas cities including Dallas and Fort Worth have implemented similar technology. The purchase will cost $100,000 annually and total $500,000 through an existing contract.
