PROSPER, TX (1080 KRLD) - A now-former school staffer at a preschool in Prosper is facing charges after four toddlers became ill after being exposed to the active ingredient in marijuana.

The four kids in the toddler classroom at the Primrose School of Prosper started showing unusual symptoms of illness Monday afternoon after being exposed to THC.

The four kids were taken to hospitals; as of Tuesday afternoon, one remained hospitalized in stable condition.

Prosper Police arrested staffer Anisah Burks and charged her with several counts, including felony possession of a controlled substance and four counts of injury to a child.

The department has notified the Texas Department of Family Services Child Care Licensing Division.

The Primrose School of Prosper has issued a statement, saying it immediately fired Burks and that she had previously passed the background check that all staffers are subjected to.

"This news has been shocking, upsetting and shakes us to the very core of every principle we stand for," the school said in its statement. "There is no greater priority to us every day than the health and safety of the children entrusted to our care."

The school was closed on Tuesday, and the toddler classroom was being sanitized.

Police searched the campus and deemed it to be safe, and the school will reopen on Wednesday.
