Prayer vigil to be held in memory of Mesquite Police officer fatally shot on Friday

The Mesquite Police Department will be holding a prayer vigil on Sunday evening, in memory of officer Richard Lee Houston II who was killed in the line of duty on Friday.

The vigil will be held at 8 p.m. in front of the Mesquite Police Department at 777 North Galloway Avenue for the 21-year veteran. Police say Mayor Daniel Alemán Jr. and local pastors will be there to make remarks. There will be candle lighting, and opportunities to donate to Houston's family. Donations can also be made online here.

Officer Houston was shot on Friday afternoon in the parking lot of an Albertsons grocery store in the 1500 block of South Beltline Road. Houston was subsequently rushed to Baylor Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 2:11 p.m.
