One of the unexpected dangers from an ice storm is what happens when the thaw sets. That's when sheets of ice and stiletto-sharp icicles begin to fall from roofs, light poles and traffic signals.
In Southlake Thursday, the fire department was called out around noon when Town Hall reopened. Southlake DPS says almost immediately they began getting reports of citizens and employees being pelted by dropping icicles, as if they were in some 1990s Super Nintendo platforming side-scroller.
A firefighter was sent up on a fire truck's extension ladder and, by hand, knocked a chain of icicles off the eaves above the Town Hall entrance.
