The SPCA of Texas is caring for 18 animals that had allegedly been abandoned in Kaufman County. The organization was called out to a property in Kemp on Thursday by the Kaufman County Sheriff's Office. Officials with the group say the owner had previously relinquished custody.

When they arrived, they found 13 dogs and five newborn puppies running freely about the property. The dogs had all developed health problems including fleas, ticks and hair loss.

The SPCA says one of the owners of the property is currently incarcerated. The other had left the property, so the dogs were not receiving proper care.

All 18 of the animals were taken in by the SPCA and are being housed and treated at the Dealey Animal Rescue Center in Dallas, where they will be evaluated for adoption or placement.
