COVID-19 activity is back on the rise in Tarrant County, and there's a confirmed case of the Omicron variant.

Tarrant County Public Health Director Vinny Taneja says the community spread level is back up to "high," with 110 cases per 100,000 people. The spread rate is currently above one at 1.26 - meaning every one infected person infects 1.26 other people.

Taneja says the more unvaccinated people there are around the world, the more variants of the virus will emerge.

"As the virus replicates, there are mutations," Taneja said. "Typically we see anywhere between two to 15 mutations on the virus genome."

Taneja says the latest variant, Omicron, is already in the state including a case in Tarrant County.
