After Texas Governor Abbott signed a bill yesterday to allow holstered handguns to be carried in Texas without a permit, there will be a public signing ceremony today.
Called "permitless carry" or sometimes "constitutional carry," the law which take effect September 1st now allows anyone 21 years of age or older, who is otherwise legally permitted to possess a fiream, to carry a handgun in public even without a permit.
The previous law demanded anyone carrying in public to complete a course of training and a criminal background check to get a concealed carry license.
The bill approved by the Texas legislature creates tougher penalties for felons who illegally possess a firearm and for those already convicted of family violence.
Today, the Governor holds a a signing ceremony at the Alamo in San Antonio. He will likely be joined by Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick, House speaker Dade Phelan and a number of GOP lawmakers.
