Grapevine police are still looking into the cause of Thursday's crash and fire that closed a very busy stretch of Highway 114 for hours.
Police learned a tow truck hit the metal guardrail on the eastbound side of 114 near the Ira E. Woods exit.
The tow truck crashed and burst into flames right in front of a big rig which was caught up in the tangled wreckage.
The scene was on the 114 overpass crossing over the Cotton Belt Trail railroad tracks used by TexRail.
Some of the burning debris fell over the side, landing on the tracks so TexRail sent out a crew to make sure there was no damage. Rail traffic was halted while they worked.
The smoke could be seen for miles so even though the westbound side of 114 was not directly affected, traffic there also slowed as drivers braked to get a look.
Some of the eastbound lanes remained closed until after dark but everything is back to normal Friday.
Investigators have not yet determined why the tow truck driver lost control to cause the crash.
