The jury took less than 90 minutes to convict Eric Kay of drug distribution resulting in death and drug conspiracy.

Kay's attorney Reagan Wynn said they were disappointed in the outcome.

"We thought there were many reasons to doubt the government's case," Wynn said. "This is a tragedy all the way around. Eric Kay is getting ready to do minimum 20 years in federal penitentiary and it goes up from there, and Tyler Skaggs is gone."

Federal prosecutors said the former LA Angels communications director was the only person who could have given Skaggs the drugs that led to his death in a Southlake hotel room in 2019.

Former federal prosecutor Richard Roper said Kay faced an uphill battle.

"The evidence showed that the defendant did distribute drugs to Skaggs and others, but his real defense is; 'well not really this time, we don't know who gave him the drugs.' That's not much of a defense," Roper said.

Skaggs' family released a statement saying they were grateful to the jury for the right verdict.
