Police were called to a home on Oak Grove Road last summer on a report of a domestic disturbance.

When officers arrived, they found something else - many chickens and roosters.

"What the officers observed were over 100 chickens at this location in pens running around," Ofc. Brad Perez said, "but (they also) observed that they also appeared to be in really bad shape."

In fact, not all the birds at the scene were alive.

"There were already 14 deceased chickens on-site when the officers were out there," Ofc. Perez said.

Others were missing some of their extremities, with their talons being stuck in the ground since they did not have a hard surface to stand on.

The birds were likely being bred for illegal activity.

"It is possible that these chickens and roosters were being bred for cockfighting," Perez said.

Animal control arrived and seized all the birds.

"They were able to actually take 142 of these chickens and roosters combined into custody," Perez said.

All had to be euthanized.

Last weekend, police in Crowley arrested Maria Rodriguez-Becerra, 38, and she is facing several misdemeanor counts of cruelty to animals.
