Back in 2022, the city of McKinney began discussing the possibility of turning McKinney National Airport into a commercial airport for passengers as well.
Now, that process has reached the final stretch as this week residents will vote on whether to pass the $200 million bond package that includes the design and construction of a 144,000-square-foot passenger terminal at the airport.
DFW could soon be among the major cities in America with three or more commercial airports, as McKinney National Airport waits to see if it will add a passenger terminal or another freight terminal.
If the bond package is approved, the airport could add up to 3,280 jobs to the region and bring in up to $115 million in local, state and federal taxes. According to Axios, the plan would see 12 projected flights daily during the first year from four passenger gates.
“This is not an election to decide will there be planes or will there not be planes. This election decides are we going to get behind the steering wheel,” said McKinney Mayor George Fuller. Early voting ends on Tuesday with Election Day on Saturday. Soon, travel from DFW could get a lot easier.
