With former President Donald Trump possibly facing another indictment, this time for his role in the events of Jan. 6, 2021, and his efforts to overturn the 2020 election, some members of Congress say that charges are inevitable.
Among those who think Trump’s crimes during the 2020 election are clear is Rep. Dean Phillips (D-MN), who spoke with News Talk 830 WCCO’s Adam Carter and Jordana Green.
Phillips, who was at the Capitol when Trump supporters stormed the building calling for the election to be overturned, shared that after fleeing the chamber to safety, he and his fellow Representatives watched the then-president give his speech to his supporters to leave the Capitol building.
Phillips said that while they watched, then-Wyoming Rep. Liz Cheney said that Trump was responsible for what happened and he must be held accountable.
“Other Republicans who were with us cheered her on and joined in that moment of unity, only to see that dissipate over the course of many weeks and months,” Phillips said.
The congressman said that he thinks Republicans went back to supporting the former president out of “fear” that he and his base would go after them and their families.
“The former president uses fear to control people, including members of the United States Congress,” Phillips said.
However, since that day, his feelings have not changed, and he thinks that an indictment of the former president would be justified.
“We all saw his lies, his activities after the 2020 election, leading up to Jan. 6, 2021. We all watched his speech that day imploring that people join him at the Capitol,” Phillips said. “We all recognize that he did nothing to stop it, and we all know now that he sat in the White House watching it on television, pleased with what he was seeing.”
Phillips didn’t hold back in his criticism of the former president, saying that what he did on Jan. 6 and the month leading up to it was “despicable” and “inexcusable,” adding that “nobody is above the law.”
While an indictment has yet to come, and it would need to be proven in a court of law, Phillips said that “anybody who is paying attention objectively” could see his actions caused the Capitol riot to occur.
