Texas Governor Greg Abbott has signed a bill that sets up a potential showdown with the federal government over nuclear waste.
A company in Andrews County near the border with New Mexico operates a disposal facility for low-level nuclear waste but has applied for a federal permit to begin accepting high-level nuclear waste from across the country.
State Representative Brooks Landgraf says the people of his district don't want that, also saying: "House bill seven aims to keep high-level radioactive waste out of Andrews county and out of Texas."
Governor Abbott signed the bill into law blocking highly radioactive materials from coming into the state. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission could make a decision on the permit for the company as soon as next week.
