Crews battling a massive grass fire in Eastland County are getting help from Fort Worth firefighters.
"We're sending eight firefighters out to Eastland with the TIFMAS group, that's the Texas Interstate Fire Mutual Aid System," Fort Worth Fire Department spokesman Kyle Clay said. "We're all providing apparatus and personnel to go out to Eastland to assist that fire department with the grass fire they have out there right now."
As of late Friday morning, the fire had charred more than 45,000 acres and was only about 4% contained.
An Eastland County sheriff's deputy was killed helping residents evacuate on Thursday night, police said.
It's not just the dry conditions that are making battling the blaze difficult, but it's also the high winds.
"Right now with the wind conditions that we have, it makes fighting those fires incredibly hard," Clay said.
It's unknown how long the Fort Worth firefighters will be in Eastland County.
"They're going to be there as long as they need them," Clay said.
Eastland County is located about 100 miles west of Fort Worth.
