An Eastland County sheriff's deputy was killed while helping people evacuate from wildfires that have burned tens of thousands of acres, police say.
Barbara Fenley died Thursday night while battling what the Texas A&M Forest Service has named the Eastland Complex Fire, Cisco police said. The fire had burned 45,383 acres and was 4% contained as of Friday afternoon, according to the Texas A&M Forest Service.
"She was a special servant and an attribute to our profession. We will kneel in prayer for her family, friends and colleagues as they mourn. RIP dear friend, you will be missed," the Cisco Police Department wrote on its Facebook page.
A separate fire burned into downtown Ranger, destroying several historic structures including Ranger's Second Baptist Church.
Elsewhere, the Burr Fire in Maverick County burned 4,825 acres and was 100% contained Friday.
The Chico Lane Fire in Reagan County burned an estimated 8,000 acres and was 95% contained Friday afternoon.
Firefighters from Lewisville and other North Texas departments are heading west to help out.
