Two-thirds of Texas teachers considering a career change

A new survey indicates that a majority of teachers across the state are considering a career change.

The poll by the Texas American Federation of Teachers shows that two-thirds of all teachers surveyed said that they have recently considered leaving the profession.

Nicole Hill with the Texas AFT said two issues stood out from the rest.

"35 percent said salary was their top priority, 24 percent said workload," Hill said. In third was workplace safety.

Shana Pawlowski, a fifth-grade math teacher in the New Caney ISD, says it also doesn't help when a small yet vocal minority demonizes teachers.

"What we've got going on is almost a negative portrayal of teachers who are worried or scared," Pawlowski said.

Texas AFT President Zeph Capo says while the teachers love their profession, some say they feel that they have no other choice but to consider a career change.
