Winter Weather Helper: Protect those pipes or pay the price

A water pipe that bursts in frigid temperatures can be among a homeowner's worst nightmares.

State Farm's Chris Pilcic told KRLD the average claim of that nature paid in Texas last year was just over $10,000.  He said a crack as small as 1/8" can leak 250 gallons of water per day.  That can cause a lot of damage.  With temperatures threatening to dip into the single digits this weekend, Pilcic recommends that homeowners take the following precautionary steps:

Disconnect outdoor hoses and install insulated faucet covers.

For indoor pipes located near exterior walls, wrap the pipes and open cabinet doors to allow warm air to flow in.

Let warm water drip overnight during prolonged cold spells.

Pilcic shared more information with KRLD's Chris Sommer.
