PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The Temple Owls were the only area college football team to play in the fall in 2020.

It didn’t go real well.

COVID-19 and injuries played havoc with the schedule and the roster, and Temple struggled to a 1-6 record.

But the Owls are looking to turn things around here in 2021 and make some noise in the American Athletic Conference.

Redshirt freshman and Georgia transfer D’Wan Mathis is expected to start at quarterback for the Owls. Head coach Rod Carey wants improvement from his offense, and sees reason for believing that will happen.

“Offensively, I just want to be more consistent,” he told KYW Newsradio.”

"I like the way our (offensive) line is coming together. The tight ends certainly have a chance to be a good group. You have (wide receivers Jadan) Blue and Randle (Jones) outside that are back, that are proven guys as far as execution. Then we have a good, big group of running backs.”

Carey breaks down the positions leading the way right now on the defensive side of the ball.

“I certainly feel great about our back end, and include linebackers in that,” he said.

“(We have) great depth at linebacker, because of the youth that we played last year. The secondary, same thing. I think those are the two areas guys got a lot of snaps because of injuries last year, and certainly we’re reaping the rewards of that on the back end of the defense.”

Temple will open its 2021 season on Thursday, September 2 with a non-conference road game against Rutgers.
