PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Two volunteer firefighters, one of them a teenager, have been released from the hospital and continue to recover from serious injuries after a vehicle struck them on I-76, killing a fellow first responder and injuring a Pennsylvania State Police trooper.

Sam Shaffer, 17, and Alex Fischer, 22, both spent four or more days in the hospital, according to the Lower Merion Township Fire Department.

Shaffer, Fischer and firefighter Tom Royds, 48, were wrapping up their work assisting victims of an accident at about 3:25 a.m. Saturday on the westbound Schuylkill Expressway near the Gladwyne exit in Lower Merion Township.

The fire department said that at that time, a vehicle struck all three firefighters and the state trooper. Royds, a 30-year veteran firefighter, was killed. A public memorial has been scheduled for Saturday.

Helicopters flew Fischer and Shaffer from the scene to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center for emergency medical care.

Shaffer had extensive head injuries, including what was the fire department described as a severe concussion, an orbital fracture in his right eye and brain bleed. He also had a torn ACL. Shaffer left the hospital on Wednesday.

Fischer left the hospital Thursday to go to a rehabilitation center, where he will recover from several weeks from what was described as a severe leg injury.
