New year, new toll rates in Pennsylvania and New Jersey

Tolls increasing by 5% starting this weekend

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Highways are about to get more expensive in Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

Starting Sunday, Jan. 2, a 5% toll increase will take effect for all E-ZPass and toll-by-plate customers in the commonwealth.

Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission spokesperson Rosanne Placey said this increase will, in part, pay off money owed to PennDOT and also keep the roads drivable.

“We do have regular improvements we need to make to our system, and we want to make enhancements as well,” she said.

If this feels like deja vu, you’re not wrong. Toll prices have increased over the last few years, and Placey expects them to continue to climb.

“Our fiscal forecast is that we will continue to have to increase tolls annually, probably for potentially the next decade or more,” she said.

Meanwhile, the Garden State will see a 3% increase starting New Year’s Day.
