PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Philadelphia police say the 16-year-old shot and killed Monday afternoon in West Philadelphia was waiting for the bus outside his school when he was gunned down.
Authorities say Bahsil Garrison and a few other teens were at the bus stop outside the Learning Academy School along Belmont Ave near 45th and Lancaster at around 3:30 p.m., when a black SUV pulled up and someone fired several rounds, striking Garrison and a 17-year-old.
Garrison was taken to Penn Hospital where he died. The teen who was hit in the arm first went home, and then went to the hospital.
Both victims were students at the Philadelphia Learning Academy.
Detectives believe someone in the group was the intended target, but they are still trying to figure out who that was.
More than three dozen kids, all 17 years and younger, have been killed so far this year.
The Philadelphia School District implemented a Safe Corridors program for students over a week ago, but this school was not in one of the 38 schools.
A school spokesperson says the district has asked for "an increased presence around the school."
