ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (KYW Newsradio) — The Atlantic City Police Department has a new four-legged officer, a narcotics K-9 aptly named Narco, who was donated by Philadelphia Eagles star defensive tackle Fletcher Cox.
Narco, a 2-year-old Belgian Malinois, has already made an impact in the city. He’s helped remove a significant amount of drugs from city streets.
Cox funded Narco’s lessons at the Atlantic County K-9 Training Academy. In fact, Cox is a regular visitor at the academy, calling it a home away from home.
“I’m here to support that, by any means,” he said. “It’s important to me. I love being around it. … It’s one of my getaways, somewhere I come for peace.”
When a trainer told him that Atlantic City police needed a new dog, Cox didn’t hesitate to help.
The K-9 completed an intensive 23-week program specializing in the detection of cocaine, crack cocaine, methamphetamine, ecstasy and heroin, the police department said.
Narco isn’t the first K-9 Cox has sponsored, and he certainly won’t be the last. He’s made lifelong friends with some of the trainers and frequently visits to train his own protection dog.
Atlantic City Mayor Marty Small said big-time athletes don’t always give back like this, so he’s extremely grateful for Cox’s generosity.
“It’s a great deed. He didn’t have to do that — he’s not even from New Jersey,” Small said. “He’s a great humanitarian and we’ll never forget what he’s done for the city of Atlantic City, for the best police department in the world.”
