PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Gov. Phil Murphy is ordering all U.S. and New Jersey flags to fly at half-staff in honor of the 16-year-old Cape May lifeguard who died after an ocean drill.

Norman Inferrera was rowing a lifeguard boat in the ocean last week when a wave flipped him over and knocked him unconscious, according to Cape May officials.

He was airlifted to Cooper University Hospital in Camden, where he ultimately died over the weekend.

In a statement, the governor said the teen’s death is a “devastating loss for his family, the Cape May community, and our state.”

“As a lifeguard,” Murphy said, “Norman took on a special responsibility to help others and that is what he was doing when he was tragically fatally injured. We will forever be grateful to him for his selfless service to the people of Cape May.”

Flags will be lowered to half-staff on Friday.
